Author's Note: This piece shows what the point of view in the book My Brother Sam is Dead.
Point of view
In the book My Brother Sam is Dead the Dad is on one side and his
son Sam is on the other. So that leaves Tim to choose his point of view on
things. From Tim Meeker perspective, a lot happens like a violent outburst about how
the war is going to change his family forever. In the book My Brother Sam Is
Dead it specifically projects how the story could be interpreted differently,
if told by others.
One way Tim’s point of view could be affected
is when Sam got executed by the British. If you took it from the British’s
point of view, they could of felt overpowering and in control. But sense it was
told by Tim’s point you felt horrible and despair. Tim and Sam’s Dad used a
quote throughout the whole book and it went like this, “The dead pay the debt
of the living.” This quote shows that to be able to feel good about them in war
they need to kill someone else in replace of themselves .
This
relates to point of view because Sam had to pay debt of someone who did wrong
in this world. Also Sam’s actions could of harmed a lot of people and their
families. Sense Tim is telling the story he makes Sam sound like this brave,
fun college boy. So I would think as the reader Sam is really fun and a brave
kid. But if the father told the story you would probably think Sam is
irresponsible college kid who doesn’t follow the rules. So therefore that’s why
the narrator’s point of view is very
important if you want to know about the other character’s or other scenes.
When you’re reading a story you need to make
sure that you know the point of view from which it is being told that is very important. I thought that if this
story was told by someone else than Tim it would be way different. Like if Mr. Meeker told the story I would think Sam
was a horrible. But sense Tim told it from his point of view you felt bad for
him and Sam. So it is really important that you know what point of view is or
else you won’t know who is telling the story.
