Today’s Society vs. Ribbons

Author's Note: This piece was written to demonstrate my knowledge of Text Analysis

Can you just imagine what little girls had to go through when they were younger in china?  Many children hundreds of years ago had to suffer for the rest of their lives, because of what parents thought was beautiful. Their mothers would put their feet under a stool, so the bones in their feet would transform into a different formation. This is the pain they will have to go through for the rest of their life, walking around with pegs, and small shoes. What would you do for beauty, just to look beautiful at that moment of time?

In the story “Ribbons” it talks about a Chinese girl named Stacy  who loved ballet but almost had to give it all up because her parents wanted their grandma to come live with them.  Stacy had a hard time because Paw-paw was favoring Ian not her. Beauty plays a role in this story, because her grandma has terrible feet the reason why she never wants to talk about it is, because when she was little her mother binded her feet this happens in China. back then that was there way of showing their  beauty. They thought that rich guys would take care of them because their feet were beautiful. So Paw-Paw had live with her feet like that for a long time. I think Modern society has changed our ideal of  beauty. In quite dramatic ways.

For example, Girls are getting skinner and guys are getting bulkier. Also wrinkles seem to be the thing of the past. In my opinion I think Hollywood plays a big role in this because look at all of the actors and actresses, singers and dancers. What do they all have in common? That’s right false beauty. I think we shouldn’t waste our time on looking good and being pretty.  I think we should spend time a helping out the world like helping nature or finding cures for cancer.

Furthermore people these days spend so much money on trying to look good. Like dying their hair, Botox, and much more, but instead they should spend their money for people in need, like making a change in the world to make yourself noticed about the good things you do. Not getting  noticed on how beautiful you are or getting noticed by getting plastic surgery. I really don’t care how I look but most other people I think today do. That’s a shame because they waste all that  money on makeup and clothes and surgery just to make themselves look better when they actually don’t.

A pain that will never  be forgotten is the foot binding many children who lived in china had to go though. Then suffered with the pain the rest of their life’s.  The pain that everyone goes through is not necessary.  If  it was today  society or if it was hundreds of years ago.  Help someone that actually needs money not just beauty that’s painful.

the Lightning thief

Author's Note: I did a text analysis piece and I did it on if the setting was different how would effect the character's?

Text Analysis

If Greek Mythology was real what would it be like? Well In the book  Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief Greek Mythology is real and is all about the Greek gods. This book is about this boy named Percy and he finds out he is the son of a god Poseidon, and he is accused of stealing the Lightning Bolt From Zeus. So he has to go on a quest to get his mother back and to find the lightning bolt. The setting is really important in my opinion because it can change the whole story just by it changing. It effects the characters and that is really important to.

Furthermore , what if the setting was different how would that effect the character? Like for example, what if Percy never made it to camp half-blood like he did in the book and the movie. How that effects the character is because then he never finds out who he really is and doesn't know that he is accused of stealing the bolt. Which is really important in this story. Why it’s important is because if he didn't find out he was accused and didn't try to get the bolt back to Zeus, a big war between the gods would've broken out.

Also the plot is effected when the setting changes. The plot is that Zeus’s bolt is stolen and he accuses Percy. And if the setting was changed that means Percy wouldn't  of known that he was accused of stealing the bolt. That’s why if effects the plot because than the whole world would of died because of the war between the gods. Changing the setting means a lot in so many ways that’s why the setting is so important in every book.

In conclusion I would like to say that the setting means a lot if changed. It effects how the characters act and play a role in the book. So that’s really important and also it effects the plot which plays a big role too. So my point of this whole piece was to try to say that changing the setting effects the characters and the plot a lot and that it makes a difference too.

A Clean, Well-lighted Place

I read the Short Script/film A Clean, Well-lighted place. And I think this may make you think a little bit more than usual.  The way Ernest Hemingway wrote the script was a little confusing at the start, but gets a lot better. What I’m trying show here is the difference that two waiters can have. And that a film can have to.

The camera angles stay at one scene for a long time and that I think changes the way the watcher looks at it. And it can be a good thing but also a bad thing because some people have bad attention spans. The music has a role in this film to. It sets the tone because it just makes you  think what’s going to happen next and it’s just fascinating . And at the end it happens again where the music picks up and it just changes the tone and its just really cool and how it brings the film together.

And for the Waiters there are two of them one is a older waiter and then there is a younger waiter also. The younger waiter is a rude , self-centered  jerk who only cares about him and wanting to get home. Which I think it terrible he shouldn’t of been so mean to the old man. And  the older waiter is wiser and actually cares for the old man and older people in general. Which technically the saying is the older you are the wiser you are. And I like how Ernest used this script and the people he used his young life, his medium life and his oldest life and he created a story which is outstanding.

Short Response

Well Lighted

The two waiters are both up late at this café that they work at. And they are waiting for this old man to leave so they can close the café. The old man is drunk and keeps wanting another beer. So the young waiter wants to leave so he can go to bed and see his wife. I think he is just a rude and a jerk in my opinion. And the old waiter he wants  the old man to stay as long as he wants because  the old waiter likes these kind of people and he gets to know them better. I think the old waiter is nice and he thinks the other waiter is rude and just doesn’t care because the young waiter even said “ I don’t care if the old man dies I wish he did”. So if I were to compare them I would defiantly want the older waiter because he would be nicer and would take of me if I needed help. And the young waiter represents bad no good, rude and a jerk in life and the older waiter represents good, happy, caring and he is just kind to older people which I think is amazing.

Lighting Thief

Text Analysis

Author's Note: I think I understand textual analysis maybe I didn't do the best on this piece but I think I did okay and understand it well. I know I didn't do much on the book part but I talked about the movie and gave some good information so I think that was good too.

Have you ever thought that it could be possible to have gods in this world of ours? Well in this book and movie  “Percy Jackson and the Lighting Thief “   its all about Greek Mythology. The main point or climax in this book is that Zeus Bolt is missing. And he is accusing Poseidon’s son Percy.  The main point that im trying to show here is that there is a lot of textual analysis in this book and movie.

Furthermore I would like to say that like the camera angle and effects in the movie are what helps the people understand the importance on what’s going on in the movie. Like for example low angle shot looking up at Poseidon – shows how big he is and how he isn’t human. Another example is High angle shot looking down on Poseidon as he is travelling somewhere – shows that he has been there before. And that’s just one thing sound effects it a lot to.
Like,  City is silence – seems to quiet, as if something is meant to happen. And another one is Music’s mood changes to a lower tone to create a darker, mysterious atmosphere. See the affect of the camera angle and sound helps a lot especially in the movie. For the  book its different. How its different is they changed the book from the movie, they cut some parts out and I think changed some stuff which is bad or good it could go both ways.
Also I would like to say that all of these things are very important to help the reader, and I guess watcher to understand  what’s going on in the movie and book . Now I understand a lot more about this movie and book and how the effects of sound, lighting, and camera effects help the book and movie for people to understand these things are.

Red Chief

Author's Note: I think that this story has alot of irony and was really hard to understand.

I read the story The Ransom Red Chief  by O. Henry it was about these to kidnappers named Bill and Samuel and they try to kidnap a get a kid and get a ransom for him. But they end up having to pay the father to get the kid back. this story has alot of irony like for example, If you attempt any treachery or fail to comply with our demand as stated, you will never see your boy again. i thought this was irony  because  they wanted money to give the kid back but then they ended up having to pay the father to give the kid back.

Touching Spirit Bear

Author's Note: i really like Touching spirit bear and how Ben uses his figurative language in this book he did a good job and i think im going to score pretty good too.

Life Changing

You come home after school, you open your door and find your mom passed out on the floor with a bottle of beer in her hand, Your dad is on the couch watching TV smoking and looks angry, you try to back away but he hits you. In your room you cry to yourself thinking it will get better, yet you know in the back of your head it won’t. Everyday this happens and there is no escape. In this book it's about a boy named Cole who has a lot of problems, but they all revolve around his anger. His mom is an alcoholic , and his dad abuses Cole.  In my opinion, Ben Mikaelsen is a phenomenal writer when it comes to figurative language.

One example of figurative language is personification, this makes the tone very upbeat and furious. The example of the personification is "Cole felt his smoldering anger ignite." (page 64) This kind of thing happens a lot in this book. Cole has these terrible anger problems that eventually gave him consequences. Like being sent off to a deserted Alaskan island. When he gets to this island he learns a lot of lessons and he changes his ways and changes completely.

The second example of figurative language is a metaphor, the example is "Fear flashed in Garvey's eyes." Page 102. How this affects the tone is because it shows that Garvey just suddenly got frightened. like he just seen a ghost or something. Ben really knows how to use figurative language in this book and I think he did a fantastic job on putting it into this book so well.

Furthermore I would like to say that how all this impacted the tone and the book is because the tone is anger and sadness. And later on in the story Cole finally changes his ways. And isn’t so angry anymore which helps him a lot. That affects the tone because the whole time he was this terrible kid now he all of a sudden just changes. Cole was also a sad kid and that change he stood up for himself and became a better person and wasn't mean anymore.

In conclusion I would like to say that Ben Mikaelson did a great job with this story. And how he used figurative language in this book.  Ben made the book come alive and really interesting . He made the tone angry and sadness and he did a good job using that in the book. Like for example he used anger with Cole because Cole had anger problems throughout most of the book. This book is honestly one of my favorites and I really like Ben Mikaelson books.
